Your Guide to Melasma Triggers and Control
Melasma rarely appears without a reason. The patches may seem to deepen overnight after a sunny weekend, a change in contraception, or a new active-led routine, but pigmentation usually reflects a cumulative response. This guide to melasma triggers explains what can switch pigment production on, why even excellent treatment can stall, and how to build a more intelligent prevention strategy.
Melasma is not a sign that skin is unclean or poorly cared for. It is a complex pigment condition in which melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, become overactive. It commonly presents as symmetrical brown, grey-brown or blue-grey patches across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and jawline. It can affect every skin tone, although it is particularly common and often more persistent in deeper complexions.
The central guide to melasma triggers
The defining challenge with melasma is that it is highly reactive. A pigment-suppressing serum or prescription treatment can improve visible discolouration, but ongoing exposure to the wrong trigger may keep signalling the skin to make more pigment. Long-term control depends on identifying your personal pattern, not simply adding stronger products.
UV exposure: the most established trigger
Ultraviolet radiation is the most familiar driver of melasma. UVA reaches the skin throughout the year, including through window glass, and is strongly associated with photoageing and pigmentation. UVB is more intense in direct sunshine and causes burning. Both can stimulate melanogenesis.

Pregnancy requires particular restraint with active skincare. Heat, sunshine and outdoor exposure
Heat is not as precisely defined a trigger as UV radiation, but many people with melasma notice flares during hot weather, sauna use, intense exercise or prolonged time near heat sources. Heat can increase redness and inflammatory signalling, both of which may aggravate an already reactive pigment pathway.
The practical answer is not to avoid movement or summer entirely. It is to reduce avoidable cumulative exposure: seek shade at peak hours, wear a broad-brimmed hat, choose cooler exercise times where possible, and use a sunscreen formula you are willing to reapply. A hat adds valuable physical protection, but it does not replace sunscreen because reflected and indirect light still reach the face.
Irritation and an impaired barrier
Melasma-prone skin does not always tolerate an aggressive correction plan. Over-exfoliation, frequent acids, harsh cleansing, excessive retinoid use, waxing, friction and poorly timed at-home peels can cause low-grade inflammation. In deeper skin tones, inflammation can also create post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which may sit alongside melasma and make the overall picture look more severe.
The trade-off is straightforward: more intensity is not automatically more efficacy. A clinically proven active used at a frequency your skin can tolerate usually outperforms a powerful regimen that leaves you stinging, peeling and inflamed.
Signs that your routine may be too active include persistent tightness, burning when water touches the skin, flaking, new redness and a sudden increase in uneven tone. Pause non-essential exfoliants, prioritise barrier support, and reintroduce treatments one at a time. Procedures, inflammation and poorly matched treatments

Medicines and medical factors
Some medicines can increase photosensitivity or contribute to pigment changes. Melasma can also occur alongside thyroid disease and other hormonal factors, although an association is not the same as a direct cause. A trigger audit is more useful than guessing. Take clear photographs in the same natural light every four weeks, rather than judging your skin day to day. Then look for patterns around weather, travel, hormonal changes, new products and treatments.
Consider these questions:
- Did the patches deepen after outdoor time, driving, a beach holiday or a period of inconsistent SPF use?
- Have you started, stopped or changed hormonal contraception, hormone therapy or a medication?
- Is your skin irritated by exfoliants, retinoids, shaving, waxing or professional treatments?
- Do flares coincide with hot weather, sauna use, high-intensity training or stress-related barrier disruption?
- Are the marks symmetrical and patch-like, or are they following spots, rashes or injury instead?
A prevention-led regimen that protects results
A refined melasma routine should be consistent, tolerable and purposeful. In the morning, use a gentle cleanse if needed, a targeted antioxidant or pigment-supporting formula suited to your skin, moisturiser where required, and tinted broad-spectrum SPF 50. Reapply sunscreen when exposed to daylight for extended periods.
In the evening, cleanse thoroughly and use one carefully selected corrective active at a frequency that preserves comfort. Depending on your skin, this may involve ingredients such as azelaic acid, vitamin C, tranexamic acid, niacinamide, cysteamine, retinoids or professionally prescribed pigment regulators.
