Does Blue Light Worsen Melasma? The Clinical View

Melasma rarely responds well to half-measures. You can be diligent with a brightening serum and daily SPF, yet still notice that patches deepen after summer, a sunny commute, or long days near bright windows. So, does blue light worsen melasma? It can contribute, particularly in people prone to pigmentation and in deeper skin tones, but the full picture is more nuanced than blaming your phone screen.

Melasma is a chronic pigment condition influenced by light exposure, hormones, genetics, heat and inflammation. The most effective approach is not to fear every source of blue light. It is to understand which exposure is meaningful, then build consistent, high-level protection and pigment control around it.

Does blue light worsen melasma in practice?

Blue light is part of visible light, the spectrum we can see. It is also referred to as high-energy visible light, or HEV light. Research suggests that visible light can stimulate melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, and may intensify existing hyperpigmentation. This effect can be especially relevant for skin types that pigment easily.

However, the blue light emitted by phones, tablets and laptops is dramatically weaker than the visible light delivered by daylight. For most people, screen use alone is unlikely to be the decisive cause of worsening melasma. Outdoor daylight, including indirect daylight, is the more clinically relevant exposure. Sitting beside a bright window, driving regularly, walking between meetings or spending time outside without adequate protection can all matter.

This does not mean screens are irrelevant in every circumstance. If your skin is highly reactive, you spend prolonged periods close to a bright monitor, or you are managing stubborn, treatment-resistant melasma, reducing unnecessary screen brightness and using a protective routine is sensible. But do not let concern over devices distract from the essentials: daily broad-spectrum sun protection, visible-light defence and a regimen designed to minimise inflammation.

Why visible light affects pigmentation

Ultraviolet radiation remains a major trigger for melasma, particularly UVA, which penetrates deeply and is present throughout the year. Visible light adds another layer. In susceptible skin, it can encourage pigment pathways that are not fully addressed by a conventional clear sunscreen, even one with a high SPF.

The distinction matters because SPF measures UVB protection, not visible-light protection. A product may offer excellent sunburn protection but provide limited shielding against the wavelengths that can aggravate brown and grey-brown discolouration. For melasma, the goal is not simply avoiding redness. It is preventing the cellular signals that tell the skin to make more pigment.

Heat can compound this response. Hot weather, exercise, steam rooms and cooking over high heat may worsen flushing and pigment activity in some people. This does not mean you need to live cautiously indoors. It means melasma should be managed as a condition with multiple triggers, not as a simple sunspot that disappears after one treatment.

Why deeper skin tones need tailored advice

Melasma is common across many skin tones and can be particularly persistent in medium to deep complexions. These skins have highly active melanocytes and may develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after irritation, acne, aggressive exfoliation or poorly selected procedures.

That is why an overly harsh routine can be counterproductive. Stinging, peeling and persistent redness are not signs that a pigment treatment is working harder. They may be signs that the skin barrier is becoming compromised, creating the inflammation that perpetuates discolouration. Premium pigment correction requires precision: active ingredients that perform, balanced with barrier support the skin can tolerate long term.

The protection strategy that makes the difference

For melasma, a broad-spectrum SPF 50 is the baseline, not the entire strategy. Choose a formula you will apply generously every morning, including on cloudy days and when you expect to remain indoors near windows. Reapply when outdoors, sweating, travelling, or spending extended time in daylight.

A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides is often the more strategic choice for pigmentation-prone skin. Iron oxides help filter portions of visible light and the tint can also provide immediate cosmetic evening of tone. The correct shade matters. A formula that looks ashy, orange or unnaturally pale is less likely to be used in the required amount, which defeats the purpose.

Physical habits add meaningful protection without making life restrictive. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and seeking shade during high-exposure periods reduce the burden on your skincare. In the car, remember that daylight exposure through side windows can be significant over time. If melasma is active, this everyday exposure is often more important than a few extra hours of laptop use.

Build a routine that treats, not just conceals

Melasma usually needs a long-term routine rather than a single hero product. The ideal regimen depends on your skin tone, sensitivity, pregnancy status, current treatments and whether acne or rosacea are also present. Still, several evidence-informed categories are routinely valuable.

Antioxidants, particularly a well-formulated vitamin C serum, can support defence against oxidative stress and help brighten uneven tone. Pigment-regulating ingredients such as tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide, cysteamine, arbutin and selected retinoids can be effective choices. They work in different ways, which is why a carefully curated combination often performs better than switching between random brightening products.

Retinoids can improve cell turnover and support a more even complexion, but they must be introduced thoughtfully. Start slowly, protect the barrier with a nourishing moisturiser and do not layer multiple intensive actives simply because your melasma feels urgent. Irritation can set progress back.

Hydroquinone remains an important clinician-directed option for some patients, often used in defined treatment cycles. It is not a product to self-prescribe casually, especially for reactive or deeper skin tones. Prescription treatment, compounded formulations and in-clinic options should be selected with professional oversight, because the wrong intensity or timing can provoke more pigmentation.

What about blue-light LED masks?

Red and near-infrared LED may suit some skin goals, but light therapies are not universally appropriate for hyperpigmentation-prone skin. Device quality, wavelength, treatment duration and your individual history all matter. If you have noticed melasma worsening around a device, pause it and seek expert advice rather than trying to push through.

When melasma will not shift

If your pigmentation has become darker, more widespread or resistant despite diligent SPF use, look beyond your serum. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, contraceptive use, certain medications, thyroid issues, heat exposure and recent procedures can all influence the condition. Pregnancy-related melasma requires particularly careful product selection, as several common actives are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
