Botched Fillers? Here’s the Solution.

Many are wary of aesthetic treatments because of the “done” look - which some people like and pursue intentionally. But what the majority of us don’t see is the natural results - because treatments have been done so subtly that they are undetectable. These aesthetic patients simply appear well rested, rejuvenated, perhaps even confident.

What is Filler Dissolving?

Some patients come for a consultation as they have had fillers done in the past, but are no longer happy with the results - either because the filler was placed in the wrong place by an inexperienced practitioner, or the filler material has migrated with time, resulting in lumps or nodules.

If this sounds like you, you may wish to (or be advised to) dissolve your filler. This can be done using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, or Hyalase®, which is a prescription-only medicine. It has an off-license use in aesthetic medicine. It is injected where the hyaluronic acid filler has been placed and dissolves it. This only works for hyaluronic acid-based fillers.

Who can have Filler Dissolving Treatments?

This is suitable for all adults who have had hyaluronic acid treatments.

Who is Not Suitable for Filler Dissolving Treatment?

You may not be suitable for filler dissolving if you have a known allergy to hyaluronidase or, in some cases, an allergy to bee or wasp stings. For botched fillers, Dr M will assess you for any sensitivity/allergy to hyaluronidase prior to treatment.

Is It Painful?

A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied prior to the treatment, and patients typically describe the level of discomfort similar to the initial dermal filler treatment.

What are the Side Effects?

The immediate side effects include bleeding, bruising, tenderness, swelling and redness around the treatment site.

Hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers, but it can also break down naturally occurring hyaluronic acid present in the body, so the results can be unpredictable and the effect dramatic. There may well be loss of volume and some skin laxity which in itself may not provide a good aesthetic result. This often corrects itself as your own body’s hyaluronic acid is regenerated 2-3 months later. Alternatively, you may wish to have a re-treatment - for this Dr M advises at least 4 weeks post-filler dissolving treatment. This is to ensure that any swelling and bruising has subsided. Also, if you have treatments too soon, hyaluronidase might dissolve your new filler too.
